  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9-inch round or square baking pan.
  2. Peel and thinly slice the apples; set aside.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cardamom.
  4. In another bowl, mix melted butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and yogurt until smooth.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture; stir until just combined.
  6. Spread half the batter in the prepared pan and layer half the apple slices on top.
  7. Spoon remaining batter over apples; arrange remaining apple slices on top.
  8. Mix sugar and cinnamon for topping; sprinkle evenly over the apples.
  9. Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  10. Cool for about 10–15 minutes before slicing.
