Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef strips (sirloin or ribeye)
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 tbsp vegetable oil (divided)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional)
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Prepare the marinade by whisking together soy sauce, hoisin sauce (if using), ginger, garlic, and 1 tsp sesame oil in a bowl. Add beef strips to the marinade and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté sliced onion until soft and caramelized; season with salt and pepper, then remove from pan.
  3. Increase the skillet heat to high, add remaining vegetable oil, and stir-fry marinated beef for about 2-3 minutes until browned.
  4. In a small bowl, mix remaining soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch to create the sauce. Pour over seared beef and let simmer until thickened.
  5. Stir in sautéed onions before serving hot over steamed rice or noodles.
