  • 1/3 cup whole milk (room temperature)
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream (room temperature)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 2 ounces cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons apple butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple filling by cooking diced apples with apple butter, sugar, water, lemon juice, cinnamon, and vanilla until softened.
  2. Make tangzhong by whisking water and bread flour over medium heat until thickened.
  3. Mix dough ingredients—flours, sugar, yeast, salt—with warm milk and heavy cream; knead until smooth.
  4. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  5. Roll out the dough and spread softened butter and prepared apple filling evenly over it.
  6. Roll tightly into a log and slice into equal pieces; place in a greased baking dish.
  7. Bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes until golden brown.
  8. While cooling, whip up the frosting with butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and heavy cream; drizzle over warm rolls before serving.
